‘99 Dodge Ram with the 5.9 Magnum and automatic trans. I’d go diesel, but I’d like a nice truck for under $5,000.

The drivetrain is solid. The dash and interior bits...not so much.

Edit: for $5k, personally I’d go with a early/mid-00s F150, but that’s just me. Their interior is more solid and parts tend to be more plentiful.

My family had a ‘98 when I was in junior high. It was pretty solid.

If you’re lucky, you can find a V10 for 5k, making it the cheapest V10 you can get :)

Never been a big fan of those for some reason...

I mean with old 90's trucks you really can’t go wrong with any of them, I just find the 5.7 to be damn near bulletproof, and when something goes wrong parts are so cheap because chevy used it in everything from your grandma’s station wagon to the hummer.

The transmissions were pretty shitty. Love the look of these though.

I understand you want a truck, I’m ok with that. But you should buy either a Land Cruiser or a Highlander, because better.

Nah, don’t like Toyota and I’d prefer a pickup.

Do you need the towing power or the bed to carry stuff?

Both.

I honestly just don’t like the 4Runner at all. I really don’t want an SUV.

I understand, I just loathe pick-ups of any sort, mostly because every single truck in my city is driven by some country-song blasting assholish countryside bro that thinks a work-truck is somehow a status thing

I had a ‘99 Ram 3500 until 2014. I loved it. Great truck, but I did have the diesel. Look for rust. I live in New England and the winters were brutal on these things here in the rust belt. Mine was fairly in scathed, but others I have seen have been much worse for wear. Other than that, very comfortable truck, and great all around vehicle. I have a buddy with the 5.9 from ‘97 that still looks great and running strong.

Good to know, thanks for the advice!

Now was it the 24v Cummins?

My hillbilly mechanic says that Dodge pickups have the worst frames of any truck. Getting into an accident in a Dodge truck he says is a death wish. He is a hillbilly though.

yeah, transmission and brakes - but they are nice looking trucks and a bit more cab room than the comparable GM and Fords of the time. I worked with a guy who had one nearly exactly like that red one, but green and my father-in-law still has his ‘98 2500.

They drink gas like crazy. 10 around town and 13 on the highway if you’re lucky. What others have said about interior build quality is correct, they fall apart quickly. It’s the worst of the full size pickups from that time period.

Excellent trucks. You will, however, want to start putting money away for a new transmission.

I like them. Especially in that twister red.

This guy would be able to tell you more on them. I heard he just blew the motor but his is the V10.
